Indie for the masses

You know those Now That's What I Call Music! compilations of top 40 songs? I guess there's like 30 volumes now. Well, Pitchfork reports that we could be seeing the first Now That's What I Call Indie Music! compilation. Vice, Sub Pop and Matador have allegedly teamed up to start this CD series. Vice is supposedly releasing the first one, although it will include artists from several labels, not just Vice artists.

This most likely won't sell to indie purists, because many of them already own the albums they want. Why would they buy a compilation of songs they already have? They will also argue that this disrespects the art of the album, which Lauren posted earlier is being threatened anyway.

Obviously this is an attempt to make money off the recent popularity of indie music. I guess they are hoping that young high schoolers will think it's cool and buy it. Either that or hipsters will buy it for their friends who are still listening to top 40 radio, but it seems like they'd just make their own mixes for friends...
